What is wrong with our Pass Rush ?

It may be fatigue or opponents getting the ball out very quickly of late, but our pass rush seems slow and ineffective in the past few games. Young has great stats but Verse & Fiske are not generating pressure or sacks as compared to last season. Verse does not seem as violent or sudden as last season and his main asset as a pass rusher is sheer power. Ford was to give us more inside pressure but it is not there. Very good run defender for sure. This is all about what his missing - At 7-2 we must be happy with our start. Simply a question of our team strength coming into the season appearing to be off in both sacks and pressure generated . Are injuries in the group a factor ( Fiske ? ) or just a down year or teams adjustments to last year? Seattle and their passing game has got to feel our pass rush seems- critical element in this game.

I see more containment than they had last year...maybe, the ends are learning how to play the game at a higher level and not just rushing straight at the QB...or it could be they suck this year for no reason at all.

I agree with this. The D is better. We have to take care of nuts and bolts first. Plus the balls are coming out faster.

Fiske is having a very sub par season. His pff ratings are horrible.

I called this in a thread last week. I think it is the scheming by Shula always rushing 4. Playing too soft in the short middle of the field. The DL needs to blitz more or threaten to (look like we are rushing 7 - have the amoeba defense look). When we don't show them pressure the QB mentally settles in. By all being up on the line makes the QB and C have to think more. Then you can send whoever you want. We had a couple plays where we rushed 3 and that didn't work and never works QBs when they don't feel pressure they feel emboldened when they pressure they get nervous sometimes leaves their spot causing the play to break down.
Shula needs to rethink how he rushes.

Just speaking this past Niners game, some probably should have listened to the Niners flag ship yesterday on what they said regarding the Rams D and how they went about game planning for CMC………
Hearing a different perspective……….

Again I was disappointed in our D last Sunday. But……..
The league again is a week to week league. You can’t generalize well we need to do this more, like blitz, and then when it doesn’t happen state what the hell. And when you hear others around the league giving a different opinion, if one is listening, it’s easy to say oh ok hmm……
We got in here all worked up last week about don’t let the Niners “dink n dunk”. Then you listen to the Niners flag ship yesterday, all day, n you hear person after person covering the league say the Rams D did exactly what you have to do against the Niners. Force them to “dink n dunk”. Have a plan on not letting the league leader in plays from scrimmage, as well as 2nd in receptions a RB, to beat you with open space after catching the ball. They said the Rams rushed 3 n played 8 in coverage for this reason and kept CMC in check. Again 99 yards total. Not a bad game mind you but he didn’t beat us either. Put six in coverage with 5 niner receivers, one being CMC, and rush 5 or 6……..You better damn get to Jones or else……..
They commented also yesterday about the Rams gang tackling Sunday. It was damn good they said. 3 Rams players they said had 11 tackles. Very little YAC especially CMC……..
Yep Rams D gave up 4TD. More than what I want. But last one was in garbage time. I yep wish they did get to Jones on Sunday. But I’m also going to be open minded and see what others felt about the “scheme” on any particular Sunday based on who we are playing and not generalize constantly and say say “why are we not doing this”……..
Week to week league. No CMC and Kittle this week. My bet a different “scheme”……..

Idc about some BS Niners talk show. They should have blitzed Mac Jones. We let him destroy us in the air the first game and should have pressured the hell out of him in the same game. Im glad we're 7-2, but lets not get upset because people choose to ask questions. Its a valid question to ask. We're curious.

Thanks this style of ameoba defense was a Belicheck staple and now Brian Flores staple. It feels aggressive even if the players back out into coverage. But the flexibility is tremendous - who is rushing and where it truly makes the offense have to guess way harder to have the QB reset the OL on the fly because the longer the DL looks like 7 the harder it is for the QB to readjust

I started this topic as a legit rhetorical question based on the performance of our pass rush to date. I accept that one plausible answer to the question is a coaching scheme by Shula . We are 7-2 and very successful in scoring D. I am not a huge blind believer in PFF grades for our front 7 Personnel to date and like to factor in what I see with my own eyes. Our tackling on D is improved from last year and that is not debatable- so IF it is more a matter of less pressure / fewer sacks from our front 7 players than last year - perhaps ( a lot or a little by system design) than we are used to seeing. Mac Jones was 33-39 and that was shocking on its face value. If scheme based , in some indeterminate rate, ok and hope we instill in Darnold the bad memory on his part from last year. The Brian Flores point is an interesting one.

Solid reply IMO………
As said previously, we played last Sunday the #1 offensive player in the league in offensive touches. And the 2nd in receptions prior to Sunday. And CMC is a RB not a WR. Granted no question IMO Shula was playing the typical let’s give them FG’s n hold them out of the EZ because he knew they couldn’t stop Stafford. I’m not always a big fan of this. And it did not work to perfection Sunday. But…..
If one really takes a look at what it looks like Shula was trying to do after the fact it makes some sense. CMC? Lowest rush per average Sunday for him. Also 3rd lowest yards per catch for him last Sunday. Anyone questioning he was the Rams target to stop first n foremost? Of coarse he was and they did. 96 total yards defines he didn’t go wild. And if you go back n watch the game there were numerous times on 3rd down one of the pass rushers peeled off to become the 9th player in coverage. Hard to see live but fact is the game plan was to eliminate big plays by the niners. Control CMC……..
Sacks? We are still 8th today after getting zero Sunday. I think we are ok. Again a few in here need to see big picture in regards to game to game scheme…….
Again solid reply by you.

Sacks are one thing, consistent pressure is another. Making the QB uncomfortable. I think we could use a little more pressure inside on the line. I would hesitate to send guys like Speights or Landman, given their impact on the run game, but one of the safeties, or even get McCreary in the game. Guy is physical and a solid tackler, with speed to get to the QB if you send him. We picked him up, how about we actually USE him. McCullough looked solid as well.
All this speaks to the idea that Shula needs to do a little soul searching on his schemes

Sacks will definitely be needed tomorrow to traumatize Darnold. Will McCullough and Lake return to blitzing? Will Verse and Young go crazy again? What about McCreary? He’s only been part of special teams so far. Secret weapon tomorrow?

Absolutely not!!! Glendora should kick me off the forum for inadvertently mentioned that name. Even if it was an innocent mistake I should lose my LA privileges.
