The Abysmal Failure of Rams Special Teams Coach Chase Blackburn: Time for Sean McVay to Act

The Los Angeles Rams entered the 2025 season with high expectations, boasting one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses led by Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua, and a revitalized running game. As of today, the team sits at 11-4, positioned for a strong playoff run in the NFC West. Yet, beneath this success lies a glaring weakness that has undermined multiple games: the special teams unit under coordinator Chase Blackburn.

Consistent underperformance, costly mistakes, and a lack of accountability have marked Blackburn’s tenure. Special teams issues have directly contributed to all four of the Rams’ losses this season, turning winnable games into heartbreaking defeats. Despite this, head coach Sean McVay has retained Blackburn, raising questions about loyalty versus results in a league where production is paramount.

Should have been announced by early this morning that Blackburn had been let go. This will happen again in the playoffs unless they act. There is zero thing McVay can say.

Every kickoff into endzone what are we afraid we cant tackle. Seattle is off we start from 25 to 32. Missed FG, bad punt coverage resulting Seattle TD, a Dolac penalty negating a huge Smith run back, really poor punting all game long, deciding to punt to a guy that is a great return guy instead of out of bounds. That is a massive amount of mistakes by Blackburns group.

I have hated this guy since he came from Carolina terrible record there why does McVay/Snead put up with this shit because he's McVays friend i don't give a fucking shit about friendship I want results. Blackburn will kill our playoffs unless you get rid of him now.

As I've said in many other places Blackburn should have been fired in October...this is unacceptable! How much more evidence does one need that the guy is completely incompetent. Are you telling me he can't teach his kicker on kickoffs to land the ball somewhere between the endzone line and the 15 yard line?

I could do that! Seriously I could, that is about 25 yards. My gosh!

Last night's loss was not due to Blackburn. Look to the Leader. Hopefully Mcvay took blame for loss. Because the loss is on him. Please don't retort that Mcvays great..... Last nights melt down is on the Leader. No I don't want another coach.

They used to have that Old NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Contest thing going on and Most of the Kicks by them stumblebums were landing or ending up in todays "landing zone" So I get what Glendora's saying when he says he could do that. If they can do it I know I could too.
I'm wondering if the reason for all the TB's is they don't have faith in the coverage or they want to avoid injuries or....????

You are correct. It is McVay’s job to hire the best candidates available. Chase Blackburn is horrible, no doubt about that, but ultimately it is McVay’s decision to keep him staff.

Could not come up with one defensive call to deny three two-point conversions. Yeah, I hope he gets a head coaching position and we get DF coordinator like Saleh...

The question is why won't McVay realize he MUST fire Blackburn. The STs are a constant problem and must change even if a new ST coach doesn't becomes the answer. Question how much worse can a new ST Coordinator be any worse i am being serious. 3 of our 4 loses had a huge STs component to the loss and Philly 100% direct loss. Truthfully if we are being honest this game as well because the punt return should have never happened period.

Most will say well it isn't Blackburns fault on the punt return for a touchdown he wasn't a player on the punt return coverage team meaning the players had every chance to stop Shaheed. You know my answer to that he is at fucking fault period. Every single kickoff the Rams kicked went into the endzone so obviously one of the factors was we were afraid of a big return well that concept was super magnified on that crucial punt return. We were up 30-14 with 7 plus minutes to go. Blackburn should have instructed Evans to punt it of bounds PERIOD even if the net yardage wouldn't have been as good as a deep punt fair catch. By kicking it out of bounds with the lead it forces Seattle to waste more time trying to score especially when down 2 tds plus 2 2 pt conversions required.

This absolutely why Blackburn must be fired the punt was down the middle of the field so there was zero thought on Blackburns part to stop a lethal weapon like Shaheed especially after all game we kicked into the endzones on our kickoffs. I even wrote a thread on this - i even posited that it was because itcwas partially because McVay didn't trust our kick off coverage team.

If we fail in a playoff game or SB it will most likely be a ST blunder by Blackburn. Everyone got happy when we replaced Ward and Karty and thought our STs woes were over and for a moment I even agreed but it's Blackburn not the team imo. He is a cancer and must be fired.

The best way to put it when McVay came to the Rams we started immediately winning why bc it was a great coach. Blackburn wasn't any good in Carolina nor for us he is a mediocre to awful level hire.

AMENDMENT - HE HAS BEEN FIRED!!!
