Time For The Rams To Move On From Stetson Bennett?

Post by GlendoraRam »

Stetson Bennett, the former Georgia Bulldogs star and national championship-winning quarterback, was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft with hopes of developing into a reliable backup or potential successor to Matthew Stafford. However, as the 2025 NFL season approaches, several factors suggest that Bennett’s tenure with the Rams may coming to an end. From limited opportunities to roster dynamics and organizational priorities, here are seven reasons why Stetson Bennett is unlikely to remain with the Rams in 2025.

Couldn't you say most of those reasons for any third string back up. What would be the fit for Bryce Perkins? He would still be 3rd string. Would Bryce be the future for Rams, if not then no Bryce. At very least PS.

I would say as an emergency QB, Perkins would be a better fit.

I whatever the vet minimum would be. Actually, since he has been out of the league and now playing in the UFL, I am not sure the vet minimum would be required.

I've always hoped that Stetson would make it but i think its just going to happen with the Rams at least.

Taking the whole year off his rookie year turned me off with him. Football was not a high priority for him. Doesn't fit what the team likes in a player. A guy who loves the game. I don't see that mental make up in him that makes me think he can get better. I think its time to move on and go with an undrafted guy at QB3. A guy who has more passion for the game. I doubt someone else would be any worse.

Look at Stetson Bennett’s career preseason stats through 5 games:
131 pass attempts
58.5% completion rate
5.9 yards per pass attempt
3 touchdowns
8 interceptions
7 sacks taken

If an NFL team is reduced to starting its third-string QB for any significant length of time, then it's almost certainly facing a big-time competitive problem.

At least the Rams curerntly have a competent #2 QB, I'm remembering the times when when they went with Sean Manion, John Wolford or Brett Rypien as their top backup... :? :(

Wasn't Warner a third string QB? However your point is well taken.

You may be right, but I hate judging a guy when he's playing with street free agents who have a very limited play book.

With that said, when he was playing with Puka in there, he did throw Puka his first pro TD.

Perfectly stated!
Okay, I agree that he has a long way to go to make the team. We all know 4th round QBs rarely make it past 3 years. (There are even 1st rounders that can't make a team.) I will DISAGREE on the mental makeup comment. This guy was a walk-on, left UGA, came back, was basically a 3rd string QB and took UGA to TWO national championships. He had almost every fan (including me), pulling against him after he won the 1st Natty. Fans were screaming to put in a 5 star QB. His ability to keep on fighting and not give up, IS the definition of "mental makeup".

This guy had a major addiction issue...I don't think we wanted him on the team during that time. Now you can argue that his addiction issues were proof of his mental makeup, and then I could possibly agree with you. I won't agree that he doesn't have "mental makeup" to fight on a football field.

I also agree that he is lacking a lot of physical attributes. The odds are stacked against him. He is a 3rd string QB for a reason. He is also still on the team for a reason. Evidently McVay sees some reason to keep him around a little longer. It could be that he is just camp fodder. He doesn't want Jimmy G playing in preseason. Does it really matter? Maybe we cut him and pick up another team's 3rd stringer...what will that do for us?

I am pulling for this guy even if he doesn't have much of a chance. He heard he was not good enough his entire college career. I did not expect his pro career to be any different.

I totally agree. Taking a year off to work on personal addiction is in no way evidence of a lack of passion for football. That being said, we have logjams at a few position groups and we need his roster spot. TE, RB, ILB will be very competitive. If we sign Ramsey then add CB to the list. I hope he gets more work and looks good in preseason and we carry him on the PS as an emergency QB. As someone said, if we are down to our 3rd string QB we are toast anyway.

Since Kurt Warner became our team's starting QB after Trent Green was sidelined by injury during the 1999 preseason, I'm presuming that he had been the top backup during the Rams' training camp.

It's possible that Warner might have momentarily been listed as third string at QB, if there had been a brief period when both Green and Tony Banks were on the Good Guys' roster during the '99 offseason... :? ;) :geek:

I bet Peyton Manning had similar stats.
Look, the dude had issues and worked through them. He has to work his way upward. Did any of you really think he was at some point going to replace Stafford? He was a 4th round pick for cryin' out loud.

I figure the Rams go with 2 QB's on the roster and put Bennet on the PS this season.

Where was it reported it was an addiction problem? I could not find any reporting on that. All I could find was a mental health issue.

This led many to believe his absence in LA may have been due to an issue with substance abuse.

Turns out that was not the case and it was actually mental health hurdles that the Rams rookie QB was needing to work through.

Not sure it had been verified publicly. I have a pretty reliable source in Athens. I wouldn’t bet my house on it, but I feel pretty confident.

Good assessment. Good point on moving on to another 3rd stringer. What do we gain.

I wish it was just smoking/drinking. I think he got his act together. Will give us something to watch during preseason.

Seriously, I wouldn’t be surprised if he beat Jimmy G out, AND I wouldn’t be surprised if he got cut. (I have never thought Jimmy G was a good QB. Yes, he is a much better backup.)

Personally, I would rather have the Rams keep a third QB on the active roster, as opposed to a fourth TE and/or fourth RB.

Quantity is no substitute for quality in football, so at some point even a 'very competitive' position has to be resolved via cutting players, some of whom would hopefully end up on our team's practice squad.

Is some other available third-string QB going to be a significant upgrade over Stetson Bennett? I'm hardly counting on that, at least Bennett knows the Good Guys' offensive system... :? ;)
