Bulldawg's boy Stetson Bennett looked great!

Post by 49RH8R »

Good game.

I really wish he played in his rookie year to see how far he's come. Not sure what his career will look like but he has grown and improved dramatically by the looks of it tonight. It was nice to see and I'm happy for him. If he plays like that in the next 2 preseason games I'm going to really hope we keep him. Stafford could retire next year and Jimmy could leave as a FA so that would leave Bennett and maybe a raw rookie 1st round pick. As crazy as it sounds, Bennett could be the starting QB for the Rams next year. :o

First of all, it is just 1 preseason game. (I would say this no matter who was playing.) I thought he did really well. That was the Stetson I saw at UGA. He is deceptively fast/shifty as well. (Not Lamar Jackson fast.) He made some really good throws and seemed to have good command of the offense. I hope he does just as well, if not better, in the next 2 preseason games. He missed a couple opportunities, but even the greats miss some. His interception could have gone either way and at least he wasn't scared to try and make a throw.

I am not ready to claim he will make the team, but he definitely took a step in the right direction. I told Delmar 2 weeks ago that I would not be surprised if Stetson beat out Jimmy G. I know that is not likely, BUT I would not be surprised. I am probably one of a few that would make that statement. At least last night we saw a glimpse of why McVay and team have kept him around. I have learned never to doubt the guy. I am also happy for him and hope he continues to improve.

Imo, Rams longterm plans with Bennett is to be a solid cheap #2 qb. A qb that can fill in a game or two for the starter. Imo he is well on his way to being just that.

This could be JG last year here. JG been looking good and will more likely leave next year for a chance to start.

Beyond this year Stafford is a huge question, that will impact the rams direction in the draft for 2026 when it comes to qb.

I dont think , at this point in his career, that JG really cares if he starts, or is back-up. I think hes more into where he can be happy. His camp could have had a starting job if they wanted one.

I don’t envision Jimmy G being a starter anymore week 1 for anyone but Rams.

Best player yesterday. Looked like a seasoned pro and not a journeyman. Really solid game

I think we need to all come to the realization that this is most likely Staffords last season (but then again, I’ve been saying it’s his last season since the SB win).

JG and SB are both solid backups. Both can manage a game and win. But that’s just it, they are backups. Rams have to get a top franchise QB, so whatever mountains we need to move to get that, I’m confident Snead/McVay will get it done.

Last time we went through this and were at a crossroads, McVay and Whitt (and the wives) caught a flight to Cabo. And it turned out to be a winning Supebowl decision.

So either we snag another Stafford out there, or sell our first born to move up in the draft… it needs to be done. The only team I can think of that had an average QB that won a SB is Baltimore w Dilfer… and that’s because that defense rivaled the ‘85 Bears.

Maybe JG would be fine returning as a backup next year, or maybe not. With that said, if Bennett pans out and proves he is a solid number 2, he will be both younger and cheaper than JG next season.

Isn't JG a FA at the end of the year? If so I don't see the Rams bringing him back. Bennett I agree could be a cheap backup which is huge because we have some young guys that are going to want to get paid here soon.

I thought Stetson looked pretty good....He showed poise in the pocket (no happy feet), looked off his receivers, head was moving around looking downfield not at the rush, slipped in the pocket well, showed nice touch, and made good decisions.

A lot to like

Basically his 2nd year, and likewise, the progress you hope to see from a 2nd year QB.

We got an extra year out of A'Shawn Robinson because of COVID. I don't think it's fair Bennett got credit for his rookie year when he was NFI from training camp. IMO we should get that year back and he shouldn't be a FA until after 2027.

He looked great although doesn't have amazing arm strength. (see int)

We could be in for a pleasant surprise with him like we did with Baker.. too early to say but all is possible in the McSnead era.

Man I never thought I would never, ever say this but Stetson Bennett looked like the best player on the field, on both sides of the ball, and it was not even close.

Well, I would certainly like to see how Stetson Bennett performs against NFL starting-caliber defenders, however that's not going to happen this year unless Jimmy Garopollo ends up sidelined by injury.

I'm figuring that some of this speculation is based on unlikely scenarios.

If Matthew Stafford can't regain his full playing health so that Garopollo ends up starting all of this season, performs pretty well (say Top 12-15) and the Rams remain contenders, why would he then want to leave the team should Stafford retire?

Some posters seem to believe that the guy would be eager to leave a situation in which he was comfortable and fairly successful, plus would inherit the starting QB position, to start out all over somewhere else at age 34. (If the Good Guys couldn't afford to pay him because of the massive 'cap hit' that Stafford's retirement would cause, that's much more likely within this scenario.)

It's quite possible for our team to lose either Stafford or Garoppolo next year, yet the Rams will likely be in serious trouble should they lose both of them, Bennett's preseason success against future practice squad members nothwithstanding.

Of course, there are plenty of possibilities... :? ;) :geek:

There are a lot of big "if's" in there. Sure, if Stafford retires JG could stay but he's a FA so you never know. Would he want to stick around and mentor a 1st round QB we gave up a boatload of picks for? All I know is Bennett is under contract next year and has really improved by all accounts.

And he did play against Chargers 1st string first drive, without our starting OL, without Puka, Adams, and Williams.
