Zone vs Man to Man

Been giving this some thought. Most teams now right a very high percentage of zone defense. The Rams play zone almost 90% of the time.

The reason is mainly because of the rules changes DB’s can’t even touch receivers anymore. But, I often see receivers run right at the DB’s and intentionally bounce off the DB to gain leverage and separation.

The brain trusts in the NFL believe fans want to see offense… high scoring games.

Today’s players in the secondary require a different skill set than the days of old.

Quickness is more important than pure speed because the safeties generally play very deep to cover the back end.
Today’s DB’s must be extremely quick reactions and must be very smart to recognize (pre-snap) what’s coming.
For the Rams, we need big quick and smart guys in the secondary. I think Quentin Lake has these qualities.

Yes i tend to agree.. that's why a lot of college CBs don't make it in the NFL.

However, this does mean that the back 7 have to play zone pass defence well not just the DBs

This is why IMO the CB is THE hardest position in the league outside of QB. Tough to find good NFL starters. But to me it's pretty clear other teams have better guys on their backend than we currently do. Could be the D scheme, could be the player skills(of lack of). Could be both. Can't expect them to breakup every play, but they been pretty bad all year despite a few good games.

I would simply prefer to watch a game with CLEARLY defined rules followed in ALL games against ALL players within those rules. No pro offense, pro defense slants, no preferred teams, no Tom Brady rules where you can't BREATH on the Golden Boy player. Not EVER going to get it, but that is STILL my preference

Exactly!! Next game you watch, take a look how the receivers are now running directly AT the DB intentionally making contact and then, they either gain separation or the DB is called for a defensive penalty.
