Diaz

Post by GoldenRam »

Reports that Dodgers have added closer Edwin Diaz, formerly of the Mets. 1.63 ERA 28/31 on saves last season .. a season where the Dodgers blew *27* saves. If report is accurate, that is certainly a good first move for the offseason.

Plan is apparently to use Tanner Scott as setup man rather than closer. Good luck to them with that. Now lets find a LF and either 2B or 3B. LF with some pop ... 3B with pop .. 2B with solid average/OBP

Ohtani
? (if they go for 2B)
Freeman
? (If they go for 3B)
Smith
Muncy (either 2B or 3B, depending on which they sign)
Hernandez
Pages (if they can't find something better)
Betts (if he returns to form .. he moves up to 2nd, if not he stays as a makeshift second leadoff guy)

If that #4 hitter is a lefty, they could swap with Smith depending on RH/LH starter

Schwarber is reported to be returning to Philly, which pretty much everyone thought would happen

Teoscar is on the trading block, no surprise. he has a decent sized contract so not sure if they will be able to unload him
Rumors are they are trying to get Bregman.
Muncy isn't an everyday player anymore but will be valuable off the bench.
Diaz...hope it works....sure as hell didn't work with Scott last year. Agree with Scott he has to come back.
Gratural is healthy...their bullpen should be solid.
starting pitching obviously solid but I think they need to add one more
2b...have to give Kim a try IMO...great defensively

You might be right about Muncy .. but it all circles around how many they are willing to sign and who they sign. I would not mind Arraez at 2B, at least offensively, but his D is suspect. Bregman would be interesting at 3B. If they sign Bregman and don't sign a 2B .. I could see a platoon situation with Muncy/Kim. I just don't see them signing that many players. To me it's either or 2B/3B and a corner outfielder or, from what I hear, they may be considering a defensive CF, moving Pages to right and Hernandez to left. Word I see is that Hernandez is not on the block, but they would like to move his D to left, Pages D to right and pick up that defensive CF. That is an interesting idea.

I'm just not really sold on Pages after that post season performance. However, there is only so much money they are going to spend. Bregman at 3B would be good, he has some pop, then either a corner OF with pop or a solid defensive CF, preferably one with a OBP around .370 or so. That with Diaz and maybe one more reliever and call it a day. The problem I see is that there isn't really a lot of quality in FA pool. Probably the best/second best bat looks to be going to Baltimore, but a 1B wasn't on our list anyway. I'll have to dig up a list and see who is out there, and who might be on the trade block

Wow .. just took a look at the FA group ... this is NOT a good group. Might have to look at trades if we want anything useful.

lot of noise about them getting Skubal from Detroit. they would have to give up a lot for him IMO
they aren't trading for a 2b they have Kim and Miggy Ro and Edman and Kike.
Pages has one last chance or he will be gone like Outman

His D may keep him this year .. but if the right trade comes up .. he's gone. Problem with all those guys for 2B is none of them are guys who get on base much. Kike does have some sock, but his value is mostly post season where he suddenly morphs into a hitter. They seem to prefer Edman in CF more than infield, but again, he doesn't really hit. He had that good WS in 2024, but his reg season numbers aren't much. The Dodgers, as far as reg players are concerned, need BATS, preferably with sock if they are corner positions. I'd be ok with Bregman, but looking at what's available in FA is not confidence inspiring.

They would definitely need to give a lot for Skubal, but he's the kind of pitcher that would be worth it. If you add him to the mix, we have some starters to play with in trying to get decent bats. I'd keep Yamamoto, Sasaki, Snell for sure. Glasnow is a maybe. When he's on he is something good. I'd like to keep Stone as well, add Skubal to that and you've got a damn good rotation. Most of those guys are going to go 6 and 7 on a regular, which would give our bullpen a chance to stay relatively fresh. Scott for 8th, Diaz for 9th, hopefully pick up or find a couple of new arms.
They got Glasnow and Margot and Pepiot and Deluca and neither of them had much going, so some of the arms we should be able to snag someone decent in a a trade I would think

I think Skubal is the best pitching in the MLB so go get him if you can. Glasnow has been mentioned in the trade and I am ok to trade him and Snell for Skubal. Skubal is a horse so make the deal.
I agree about getting another bat and that is why Teoscar is on the blocks right now. I would like a Bregman to come in. I don't want Bellinger but I have heard on talk radio about them being interested in him. Hope that doesn't happen
